The Berwick Hospital Center is a community based medical center serving the health care needs of the people of the north central Pennsylvania. Founded in 1906 in Berwick by a group of community leaders, the Hospital initially operated in a residence on E. 7th Street. With the financial support of the area community and businesses, the Hospital moved to a new building on Mulberry Street eight years later where it remained for 45 years. In 1959, the Hospital moved into a new 189 bed acute care facility at its current location on E. 16th Street. The Hospital was expanded and renovated in 1986 to meet the growing and changing needs of the community it serves.
Commonwealth Health Systems purchased Berwick Hospital in 1999 as part of a six hospital network in northeastern Pennsylvania. The Hospital continued to innovate and improve services becoming an accredited Chest Pain Center by the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care and is proud to have received The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval and the American Stroke Association’s Heart-Check mark for Acute Stroke Ready Hospital Certification. In 2020, Berwick Hospital also received the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services 4 star award for patient care. Berwick Hospital Center has the medical command designation from the PA Department of Health which allows the Hospital to work on certifications for ambulance EMT’S and paramedics. The adult psychiatric unit has also been certified by the State of Pennsylvania.
Berwick Hospital Center is also proud of its certification by The Joint Commission whose standards are based on an objective evaluation process t0 help health care organizations measure, assess, and improve performance. The standards focus on important patient, individual, or resident care and organization functions that are essential to providing safe, high quality care. The survey assessment is conducted for the purpose of determining compliance with the Medicare conditions for hospitals. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) Regional Office uses the assessment to determine the Hospital’s Medicare participation.
Purchased by Fayette Holdings in 2020, Berwick Hospital Center today is a 90-bed, acute care facility where technology and skilled professionals come together to provide compassionate, patient-focused care. The Hospital has cared for the people of Berwick and surrounding communities for more than 100 years and offers a full range of health care services including inpatient, outpatient, medical, surgical and emergency care.
